Choosing the right flooring is only half the battle—keeping it clean and well-maintained is what makes it last. At R&N Carpet Services, we help homeowners and business owners across the region install beautiful, durable floors. But no matter how high-quality your floors are, improper cleaning can cause damage, dullness, and premature wear.

Here’s your ultimate guide to the do’s and don’ts of cleaning carpet, hardwood, laminate, and luxury vinyl flooring—straight from the flooring pros.

Carpet

DO:

  • Vacuum regularly. At least once a week, more often in high-traffic areas.

  • Blot stains, don’t rub. Use a clean cloth and work from the outside in.

  • Use carpet-safe cleaners. Look for formulas specifically made for your carpet type.

  • Schedule professional cleaning. Once every 12–18 months helps lift deep dirt and allergens.

DON’T:

  • ❌ Over-soak with water. This can cause mold and mildew to grow in the padding.

  • ❌ Use harsh chemicals or bleach. These can discolor fibers and degrade the carpet.

  • ❌ Rub spills aggressively. This just pushes the stain deeper and damages the fibers.

Hardwood

DO:

  • Sweep or dry-mop daily. Grit and dust can scratch the surface over time.

  • Use a damp (not wet) microfiber mop. Light moisture is okay—excess water is not.

  • Place mats at entrances. Prevents dirt, grit, and water from damaging the finish.

DON’T:

  • ❌ Use steam mops. High heat and moisture can cause warping and finish damage.

  • ❌ Use vinegar or ammonia. These can strip the protective coating over time.

  • ❌ Ignore spills. Wipe them up quickly to avoid water stains or warping.

Laminate Flooring

DO:

  • Sweep or vacuum with a soft attachment regularly.

  • Use laminate-safe floor cleaners. Or a lightly damp mop with warm water.

  • Clean spills immediately. Laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof.

DON’T:

  • ❌ Use wet mops or steam. Moisture can seep into the seams and cause swelling.

  • ❌ Wax or polish. Laminate has a built-in finish—adding anything on top can make it slippery or cloudy.

  • ❌ Use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads. These can scratch the surface.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) & Tile (LVT)

DO:

  • Sweep daily or vacuum with a hard floor setting.

  • Use pH-neutral cleaners designed for vinyl flooring.

  • Use felt pads under furniture. Protects the surface from scratches.

DON’T:

  • ❌ Use steam cleaners. The heat can cause the adhesive to weaken over time.

  • ❌ Use wax or solvent-based polish. It can dull the finish and cause buildup.

  • ❌ Drag furniture. Always lift to avoid gouging the floor.
